During the fall semester of my second year (2020), I got the opportunity to work for the Learning Commons at UC as a peer tutor and a front desk assistant. For those who do not know, the Learning Commons provides centralized academic support for every student at our University. As a Front Desk Assistant, I had to make sure that students and tutors get in contact and I had to provide a good customer service by making sure that all the emails and calls were answered. On a weekly basis, I would meet about 8 students for a one-hour session and I would work about 8 hours as a Front Desk Assistant and help the students connect with their tutors. This job was considered as a campus internship and therefore I had to take a course called INT 1000. It was a great experience that I will never forget as it allowed me to gain professional work experience, develop cross-cutting skills and engage with professionals to develop workplace etiquette. The biggest takeaway that I get from this experience is that it has allowed me to improve my communication and timekeeping skills. I really wanted to work as a Peer Tutor because I knew I was going to become a better leader as I would have to communicate to people from different backgrounds that I do not know. At the end of the semester, I realized that I had developed a lot cross-cutting skills and you will be able to learn more about them by taking a look at the document that I have attached. 😊
