“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its successful outcome.” – William James.
I read this quote a couple days before the beginning of my second year (2020-2021) and I have kept it on my mind ever since. It is a surprise for no one, the year 2020 was a difficult year for the entire world, regardless of where you live. We all had to quarantine, classes were online, businesses had to close, seeing our families and close friends was hard and I have to admit that I was doubting myself and my ability to succeed throughout the academic year.
However, I did not let the fear of uncertainty and switching to online classes ruin my second year. In fact, I decided to go out of my comfort zone and do things that did not seem easy to me. I started the year with a new roommate with whom I got along well and spent a lot of time. Aside from academics, I worked two jobs: one as a Front Desk Assistant for the UC Learning Commons and the other as a Sales Advisor at Best Buy. I enjoyed working a lot because I was able to be around some co-workers that I like and it was nice to see people and not stay in my room all the time.
I also decided to get more involved on campus. I got the opportunity to be a part of the UC Student Government Mentorship Program where I was able to learn more about Student Government, you will find more information about the program under the honors experience tab. I was also able to be in the membership committee of the Business Fellows Program and I helped the committee track the participation and evolution of all the members. Additionally, I was accepted into the highly selective Lindner Investment Banking Club where I had the chance to learn more about investment banking and work on projects.
Finally, I ended the school year with a 4.0 GPA for the spring semester and my involvements on campus allowed me to learn, make friends and find professional opportunities. I am so excited to now be a rising third-year as there are many things that I look forward to. Throughout the school, I will be working as a front desk assistant Mentor for the UC Learning Commons. I will also have the privilege to be a part of Student Government as the executive director of career services and a tribunal senator of the college of business.
I cannot wait to read this again next year, tell you about the 2021-2022 school year and share my experiences!
